"Get the edge
on the other candidates,
create that winning difference! " |
How to get that job (and keep it) is a valuable tool for ...
The book uses real life experiences, time tested and proven (sales) tips, teacher courseware and self paced exercises and case studies to explain and teach the philosophy and technique developed by Steve Bethell to find and keep your dream job.
Here Steve explains in his own words...
Reflecting real life experiences
Very early on in my career I began to take a keen interest in the components of a successful interview. Where did the ‘edge’ that some displayed come from, why were some people snapped up quickly by employers (and I thought they were pretty dumb at the time), and why were some very intelligent people struggling to get interviews, let alone get selected as the successful candidate?
In my quest for the answer to these questions, I enrolled myself on numerous long and expensive ‘professional’ courses covering interviewer skills, human behaviour, recruitment and selection and more. I read anything I could on the subject and, of course, I was fortunate enough to have been working for rapidly expanding companies so I received a great amount of exposure to the whole process of recruiting.
A number of facts emerged as time went on that will always remain true:
So, this book focuses on Attitude.
Case Example #1
*Names have been changed to protect individuals
Name: John *
Age: Mid 20s
Background: John was a very successful and intelligent young man. He was a trained pilot and loved his work.
He was involved in a motorcycle accident and suffered serious head and other physical injuries.
After lengthy rehabilitation he was told his career outlook was not favourable and at best he would be lucky to find a sheltered workshop arrangement.
Solution: John was referred to Steve by a disability employment agency. Steve used the contents of this book to provide John with the technique and confidence to project himself in a positive light.
Outcome: Steve helped John to find meaningful full-time employment. John has since actively progressed his career and is now working again in the aviation industry which is his passion.

Time tested and proven (sales) tips - that work immediately
As a secondary skill set, we weave in some basic sales techniques that really do make a difference. Everyone will benefit from a few simple sales skills, regardless of their actual job! You must appreciate that and, one day, you may even choose Sales as your career path—and a top career it is too.
The motivational psychology of a person looking for employment and that of a sales person is almost identical. Both need to develop a plan for prospecting, both feel rejection and hear the word ‘no’ on a regular basis, both need to self motivate and both, at times, feel desperately depressed. The up-side for a sales person though, is that when they score a big ‘win’ they make some good money—in some cases, huge money.
The sales techniques we talk about are not difficult to learn or apply. In putting them into practice however, they may feel strange and awkward at first—but persist at all costs.
Career Management is a vital module, because if the student has a clear perception of how they conduct themselves in work this will directly affect their answers, and performance, in the actual interview.
Also, various life skills are discussed which, had I heard and applied them in my teenage years, would have helped me avoid so many mistakes. I hope you relate to these tips and realise results.
Finally, as you go through life, concentrate on listening, observing and learning. Too many people claim to have ‘ten years experience’ which, on closer examination, turns out to be one year’s experience ten times.

Case Example #2
Agency: Federal Employment Agency, Centrelink
Background: Centrelink is an Australian Government Statutory Agency, assisting people to become self-sufficient and supporting those in need.
Solution: Centrelink engaged Steve to deliver the book as courseware. The courseware was used to assist the long-term unemployed to develop skills for job hunting. They also used the book to provide training on interview techniques.
Outcome: A number of people trained were known to find jobs very soon after the course.

Teacher courseware and self paced exercises
Most of the pages reflect an interactive ‘Overhead’ format. A question is posed, and the student(s) are asked to consider and respond with an answer, their choice, before the answer is revealed. This approach encourages debate, correcting mistakes, and of course teaching ‘good attitude’. Importantly, this interactive format keeps students interested, engaged and involved. The alternative of being ‘talked at’ without direct participation can send people asleep!
Apart from individuals reading this courseware for their personal benefit, this is ready made material for coaches, mentors, high school teachers, employment agencies, and careers counsellors.
This material has been delivered to both individuals and large audiences (often broken up into teams to facilitate mini workshops).
Case studies
To clarify the points made in the book, I have included 10 short case studies. The case studies examine the mistakes and successes of real life situations that we can all learn from.
